​Elihu Root was an American lawyer and statesman. Despite serving as Secretary of War under Roosevelt and President William McKinley, Root actively worked for peace among nations states. In 1906, he pursued Latin-American states to join the Second Hague Peace Conference, negotiated agreements with Japan and Great Britain and supported Andrew Carnegie on programs for international peace. The Nobel Peace Prize 1912 was awarded to Elihu Root “for bringing about better understanding between the countries of North and South America and initiating important arbitration agreements between the United States and other countries.”
