Cindy Lee Miller Sheehan is an American anti-war activist. Sheehan’s son, U.S. Army Specialist Casey Sheehan, was killed during the Iraq War after which she became active in the anti-war efforts. She was one of the founding members of “Gold Star Families for Peace”, an organization she created in January/2005 with other families. It seeks to end U.S. presence in Iraq and provides support for families of soldiers killed in Iraq. In addition, she camped in a ditch near President Bush’s ranch in Texas. Many people stopped by to show their support or join. Her demonstration became known as “Camp Casey”. Camp Casey became a regular protest event when President Bush was in Crawford for holidays and vacations. Sheehan and Gold Star Families for Peace were awarded the ‘Domestic Human Rights Award’ by Global Exchange.
